It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Edward Haack Smidt of Rochester, Minnesota on October 5, 2023, at the age of 86. Donald was a man who was dearly loved and cherished by many. He leaves behind a lasting legacy that will be forever etched in our hearts. His parents, Alice Haack Smidt and Bert Russman Smidt, were blessed with a son who brought immense joy to their lives. Donald’s aunt, Tena Smidt Poppen, and his uncle, Carl Schroeder, held a special place in his heart, fostering a bond that would endure for a lifetime.

In the embrace of his family, Donald experienced deep love and companionship. His beloved wife Carol Schumann was a source of unwavering support and understanding throughout their journey together. Their son Charles and daughter-in-law Tamera were a constant source of pride and joy for Donald. He treasured the irreplaceable bond he shared with his granddaughters, Dr. Jacquelynn Faye and Grace Carolynn, who brought immeasurable love and laughter into his life. Donald’s great grandchildren, Isla and Vera Kirihara, held a special place in his heart, adorning his days with boundless happiness and sweet memories.

Donald’s warm presence extended beyond his immediate family. He was an individual who touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts. His memory will be cherished by countless relatives and friends, who were fortunate enough to experience his kindness and compassion firsthand.

To honor and remember this exceptional man, visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 11th, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Thursday, October 12th, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, October 12th, 2023, at 11:00 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church (222 6th Ave SW, Rochester, MN 55902).

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to organizations that held a special place in Donald’s heart: Trinity Lutheran Church Rochester Minnesota, Rochester Central Lutheran School, or Seasons Hospice. Your generous donations will carry forward Donald’s spirit of love and compassion, allowing his legacy to live on.
